Welcome, Su Lute, author of Dragon's Thief

Su, what are your thoughts on my New Year’s resolution to Take Time for Other Creative Passions?

Resolve 2013: Photography And Other Creative Passions
Susan Lute

Here's something no one knows about me. When I was a young married woman – we won't say how young - the Mr. used to haul me around perched on his shoulders. I know, but I was very tiny then. Anyway, we'd go all over talking about my dream to become a photographer. Back then it wasn't as easy as it is today. There were darkrooms and negatives and big clunky cameras. Now that I think about it , my parents gave me my first box camera when I was eleven. I still have the pictures I took with it and maybe the camera itself tucked away safe.

That was my first creative passion and is still a passion of sorts but it's morphed a bit. I LOVE taking pictures, but with the advance in technology, what I love more is editing the pictures, and a new passion, composing book covers. My favorite so far is the cover for Dragon's Thief. Yup. That's mine.
We need passions in our lives. When I think about taking a break from the day job, I turn to retail therapy or walking. When the writing comes to a halt and I need to figure out why, it's the camera I grab, or I open up GIMP and work on the latest cover. When I'm traveling I take both the camera and the baby Dell with me. I don't want to miss a single minute of writing...or taking pictures...if I get the opportunity.
And how do you find your “other” passion? If you take a minute to think about it, it's probably that thing you always turned to when things get tough. Some knit or crochet. Some read, paint, or draw. You could try something new, quilt a baby blanket, sew a new skirt.
I've tried just about everything creative there is, so I know what rings my chimes and brings me back to center when I get out of alignment. If you don't know what drives you, try something new this month
Make it something you've never done before
Take baby steps, so you don't bite off more than you can chew
Go for it.

  3. Su, I knew you loved photography. I didn't know you did your own covers. Dragon Thief is stunning! I am uber impressed.

Photography has become more fun for me with the advent of digital cameras. I can take as many shots as I want and not worry about the processing costs for film. That has also resulted in much better pictures as a whole. It's definitely a wonderful new world.
